Otto Naegeli was born in 1871, in Ermatingen, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau. He completed his medical degree at the University of Zürich in 1896, his habilitation in 1899, and led his own medical practice in Zürich until 1912. From 1912 until 1918, Otto Naegeli was an Associate professor in Tübingen (Germany) and he was then appointed as Director of the Medical Clinic, again in Zurich, where he worked until retiring in 1937. From 1921 onwards, Otto Naegeli was both the Director of the Medical Clinic and held the Professorial chair. He died on March 11, 1938.

His scientific research covered many fields, and included studies of tuberculosis, haematology, accident-provoked neuroses, and differential diagnosis.
